Valbonne
Valbonne, which means Happy Valley in Latin (vallis
bona), was founded in 1519. It was built in a chequerboard
design with the main square in the center. The church
predates the village by 300 hundred years and lies on
the border rather than in the center. This charming
village has a very active life with wonderful restaurants,
cafes, boutiques and small commerce.
Its proximity to Sophia Antipolis (an
international business park) guarantees Valbonne's popularity
with people of all nationalities. English is commonly
heard spoken in the streets. Valbonne hosts many different
festivals and routine activities. One is the lively
outdoor market every Friday morning which sells food,
crafts and local delicacies.
The River Brague passes through Valbonne
on its way to the sea. There are lovely walks along
this river leading to other villages such as Biot (approx.
3 hours).
