Nice
Nice is considered the capital of the Cote d'Azur. Local
excavations provide evidence of human settlement in
Nice 400,000 years ago. The area has changed owners
numerous times since then. In 1860, it was finally restored
to France for the last time. There were 40,000 inhabitants
at that time, now it is the second largest town on the
Mediterranean after Marseille and the fifth largest
town in France.
Nice stands at the head of the Baie
des Anges. The Promenade Des Anglais lines this beautiful
bay where the water is clear blue and the beach is made
of large stones instead of fine sand. Famous hotels,
such as the Negresco, and many elegant apartment buildings
face the promenade and the bay.
There are many sights to visit, such
as the Roman baths, botanical gardens, cathedrals and
museums, notably the Matisse Museum. Another huge attraction
is the Nice Carnival, which is marked by processions,
confetti battles, fireworks and masked balls.
