Monte
Carlo
The principality of Monaco consists of: Monaco, the
old town; Monte Carlo, the new town; La Condamine, which
links them together; Fontvieille, the industrial district.
Monte Carlo is famous throughout the world for its casinos,
majestic palaces, luxurious hotels and villas, elegant
shops, and exotic gardens and plants. The casino, the
oldest part of which was built in 1878, is set on a
beautiful terrace with wonderful views over the sea.
There are also several sights to visit
in Monaco such as the Palace and the changing of the
guard, the Oceanography Museum, the Cathedral, and the
views of the harbour and the coast.
A host of festivals are held in the
principality. Among the most well known are the Monte
Carlo Rally (end of Jan.), the Monaco Grand Prix (May),
the International Tennis Championship (April), the Monte
Carlo Golf Open (June), concerts in the Palace courtyard,
and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera.
