Grasse
Grasse is known as the perfume capital
in France. Before this, Grasse specialized in leather
work and glove making. The great perfumeries were born
out of the fashion for perfumed gloves which was introduced
in Grasse in the 16C. There is an International Museum
of Perfume which presents the different techniques to
make perfume, a research laboratory and different kinds
of perfume vessels. There are also 3 perfume factories
open to the public.
Strolling through the old town can
occupy a couple of hours. There are several old sights
to visit such as the Cathedral Notre Dame du Puy, which
dates back to the late 10C - 11C, the town hall, formerly
the Bishop's Palace, and several museums such as the
Museum of Art and History of Provence.
There are many driving tours available
from Grasse. Some of the more interesting are the Grottes
de St. Cézaire, caves hollowed out of limestone
with interconnected passages descending to 40 m. (130
ft.) underground, and the Gorges de la Siagne.
