Gourdon
Gourdon, like the village of Eze, is perched high on
a hillside. Further away from the sea, approximately
20 km. inland, Gourdon has a beautiful panoramic view
of the countryside and surrounding mountains. It stands
more than 500 m. (1,640 ft.) above the Rivier Loup.
The old houses have been restored and some have been
converted into boutiques, cafes and small restaurants.
The chateau is a interesting sight
to visit. The fortress was built in the 13C. On the
castle's ground floor is the Museum of History, which
contains a collection of arms and armor. There is a
chapel built in the 16C. In Henry IV's Tower, an opening
in the floor reveals the former dungeon The terraced
gardens have been made into a botanical center. The
view from here is one of the best in Gourdon.
