Eze
Eze is a perfect example of one of France's many old
villages that was built perched on a hill. 427 m (1,410
ft.) above the sea, Eze boasts breathtaking views of
the sea and mountains. Its winding streets and alleyways
are made of cobblestones, steeply sloped and only accessible
on foot. The entire village was built of stones from
the hillsides. In recent times, tourism has replaced
the village's former industries, the cultivation of
tangerines and carnations.
Towards the top of Eze there is an
Exotic Garden which, designed in 1949, now holds several
hundred plants, mostly varieties of succulents and cacti.
From this garden one has an incredible panorama of the
Riviera. On a clear day, it is even possible to make
out Corsica.
The chapel of Sainte Croix, dated 1306,
is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the
district. The church in Eze, Church Notre Dame de l'Assomption,
was built in 1764.
